When calligraphers talk about calligraphy on copper plates, they are referring to a script that was popular around the 18th and 19th centuries.
Cursive Alphabet: Your Guide To Cursive Writing
Traditionally, publishers print books using sheet metal. An author would engrave or etch their work onto a copper sheet and send it to the press for use. Eventually, this process named the script we now call copperplate.
Look closely and you’ll see that one of the main characteristics of copper plate is the difference between thick and thin lines.
By applying pressure, the writer can add shadows to their lines, which gives the script a more elegant look.
Learning to write large letters on copper plates means learning and accepting some of the customs and traditions that go along with it.

We’ve already looked at the traditional tools of the trade, and there’s another element of copper practice that’s important to adopt: basic strokes.
Traditionally, copper calligraphy is written by breaking each letter into smaller parts called basic strokes.
These are the basic strokes that make up the lowercase alphabet. Click to read our complete guide to miniature stories.
Writing each letter piece by piece may seem tedious, but the whole point of calligraphy is to write as beautifully as possible.

You can think of learning calligraphy like learning a piece of music: rather than repeating the entire piece, it’s better to isolate difficult passages and master them one at a time.
Without guidelines and tapering lines, it would be impossible to get letters of uniform size, angle, and spacing.
Before looking at the letters themselves, let’s take a look at the main strokes and their meaning in copper letters.
You may be familiar with the 8 basic lowercase letter strokes, and uppercase letters use a completely different set of strokes.

When writing, pay special attention to the shaded part: the goal is to make it follow the slatted line
The famous calligrapher Paul Antonio offers some useful tips for practicing this rod that we use in our practice.
He suggests drawing a straight line on the second attacker, then continuing to the baseline before finishing with another straight line.
Again, avoid the original S-shape and be sure to follow the slat line. Once you hit the line, you stay on the line until you reach the top.

We start at the top and work our way down to our baseline, adding shadows as we go.
Note that the C shape does not have a straight line. Instead, we want it to be fully curved.
The best way to practice this trick is to make several large ovals. You’ll notice that after you’ve done this a few times, the movement will feel more natural.
The final stroke of the stem is nearly vertical, and it’s not hard to see where the name “vertical curve” comes from!

For this last stem stroke, we drop the slanted line to create a stroke that is perpendicular to the baseline and has a slight curve.
Unfortunately, that’s what makes this line harder than it sounds. Creating a line that is at a 90 degree angle takes some practice. Avoid your stroke relapse
Capital trunk. Capital stems are the backbone of your letters, and input elements are secondary elements that are less pronounced.
While the uppercase stem takes up more space, the input elements are smaller. Instead of going from the baseline to the second screen, input elements start at the header.

Likewise, the shaded parts of the entrance elements do not have the same thickness as the capital’s stems. A slightly thinner shade is called a secondary shade.
A reverse spiral goes counterclockwise instead of clockwise. The result is an oval with a shadow on the right side instead of the left.
Give yourself some extra space below the second upline to finish your stroke in different ways.
By changing the way you finish your ellipse, you can create many variations based on this input element.

Start at the bow line, go up and start the turn when you get halfway between the first and second climbs.
Make sure your curve is still only an x high, and don’t forget to add a shadow to your downward stroke!
After the ellipse and the counterclockwise ellipse, we now have a horizontal ellipse. Usually the oval is straight, but this time it is wider than it is tall.

For this stroke, the movement is still counterclockwise, resulting in the shadow on the left side of our oval.
Again, the input element forms the basis of several variables. Which variant to choose depends on which letter or main stream you are looking for.
The horizontal oval starts between the first and second scars and goes down until it almost touches the line of the head.
