The perfect picture of the place, which can be called a rare and precious karst natural park, was chosen as “the most beautiful place in China” in 2006… The Ghetto River absorbed the essence of heaven and earth for millions of years, growing this wonderful place. If life is a song, then here is a beautiful and musical song, you can forget everything for a while, as if you entered a world like paradise … Looking up, you can see that there are many low hills stretching all the way. I think these hills are equivalent to the iconic scenery of Guizhou, which can be seen in many places. However, the general karst landscape created by the combination of mountains and rivers makes people feel strange. It is wrong to click two pictures on your mobile phone. It is not surprising that Dr. Richard Maia of France once said: ”The most beautiful karst areas of the world are concentrated in tropical countries. China is mainly concentrated in Guizhou, which occupies 70% of the land area. parts of China In 2006. At the end of the journey is Dahe Miao Village, like a sacred place of paradise. It’s all part of the greenhouse classroom of Carrie Roberts, one of two agriculture teachers and advisors for the Talawanda/Butler Tech FFA program.

The program began with hydroponics in the school’s greenhouse where students learned about growing plants without soil but using nutrient solutions in water and exposed roots. These nutrients come from a variety of sources including fish waste, duck manure and other sources.

That was expanded last spring when the class used Butler Tech grant money and other funding from the school to purchase an aquaponics system to facilitate that growing process.

Now, the hydroponics system sits on one side of the greenhouse aisle and the new aquaponics system sits across from it, allowing students to use both and learn from each.

The aquaponics system starts with a large water tank containing fish – tilapia – and tanks and pipes connected to a growing area where cauliflower and kale plants grow with their roots in water rich in nutrients and free of pollution.

“The nutrients from the fish provide nutrients to the plants and filter back to the fish,” Roberts explained of the integrated aquaponics system.

Setting up the program has not been without its challenges, but the students have tackled each problem with solutions to make it work properly over the past few weeks.

“There have been ups and downs,” said Eliza Jones, one of three students who worked as greenhouse managers and were involved in setting up the aquaponics program over the summer. “We worked two days, about five hours a day. We had pallets of stuff.”

The student had to assemble the system, install the wire, solve the problems, understand the electronics, and finally, find the right balance of nutrients, measure the pH of the water to determine how acidic or alkaline the water is and the problem with the foam that collects in the water.

The three were recruited to their senior positions last spring when Roberts completed the FFA and agricultural education program needed to find the active role of sophomores. First-year FFA members, called Greenhands, have their own organization, activities and officer corps. Juniors and seniors dominate the FFA program.

“I wanted to give some leadership opportunities to some of the sophomores,” he said, adding that he went to freshman coach Mike Deringer’s class and asked for nominations. “The three seem interested. They came in during the summer and joined.

He said the students used much of what they learned about motors, engines and other areas both in the classroom, through FFA and at home to solve problems and make the aquaponics process work.

“The pump went down and they fixed it. They didn’t just throw it in the trash. They used skills learned at home,” Roberts said.

Michael Schwab, who runs the first hydroponics system with Dalton Schlichter, was part of the team that put together the aquaponics system.

Schwab explained that it takes a long time to set everything up properly and to deal with problems like foamy water and clogged pumps.

The water is cloudy so the fish are not easily seen, but they added a net over the tank when four of the original 30 fish managed to jump out of the tank.

Beckner said the fish feed is dispensed on a timer so that they receive a set amount at regular intervals.

Lightfield explained that the water from the fish tank goes through the plant substrate not into the dirt but into the absorbent clay rocks that absorb the water and salt from the plants.

Then the water goes to another water tank without clay stones, where the plants are kept on the board with their roots down in the water bath, and they absorb the water rich in nutrients.

Jones said they realized how lucky they were to have an aquaponics system when they saw how such a system is being used to feed people in Utah and Mexico. Not only can the plants be eaten by humans, but the fish that grow in the system can also be eaten.

He said the program costs $6,000. They used a Butler Tech grant for this, as well as Butler Tech program funds.

“Ms. Roberts wanted an aquaponics program for a long time and finally found it,” said Jones, adding that the three principals were part of a video presentation shown at a recent Battler Tech board meeting. “Hannah, Justin and I went to the whole board meeting with the little program and the beta fish. It was nerve-wracking talking to people but really, really important. It was fun.”

Greenhouse grown produce is FCCLA certified in their food preparation classes and they hope to get tilapia meals from the fish tank when they are big enough to eat.
