It’s all part of the greenhouse classroom of Carrie Roberts, one of two agriculture teachers and advisors for the Talawanda/Butler Tech FFA program.
The program began with hydroponics in the school’s greenhouse where students learned about growing plants without soil but using nutrient solutions in water and exposed roots. These nutrients come from a variety of sources including fish waste, duck manure and other sources.
That was expanded last spring when the class used Butler Tech grant money and other funding from the school to purchase an aquaponics system to facilitate that growing process.

Now, the hydroponics system sits on one side of the greenhouse aisle and the new aquaponics system sits across from it, allowing students to use both and learn from each.
The aquaponics system starts with a large water tank containing fish – tilapia – and tanks and pipes connected to a growing area where cauliflower and kale plants grow with their roots in water rich in nutrients and free of pollution.
“The nutrients from the fish provide nutrients to the plants and filter back to the fish,” Roberts explained of the integrated aquaponics system.
Setting up the program has not been without its challenges, but the students have tackled each problem with solutions to make it work properly over the past few weeks.

“There have been ups and downs,” said Eliza Jones, one of three students who worked as greenhouse managers and were involved in setting up the aquaponics program over the summer. “We worked two days, about five hours a day. We had pallets of stuff.”
The student had to assemble the system, install the wire, solve the problems, understand the electronics, and finally, find the right balance of nutrients, measure the pH of the water to determine how acidic or alkaline the water is and the problem with the foam that collects in the water.

“The pump went down and they fixed it. They didn’t just throw it in the trash. They used skills learned at home,” Roberts said.
Michael Schwab, who runs the first hydroponics system with Dalton Schlichter, was part of the team that put together the aquaponics system.
Schwab explained that it takes a long time to set everything up properly and to deal with problems like foamy water and clogged pumps.

The water is cloudy so the fish are not easily seen, but they added a net over the tank when four of the original 30 fish managed to jump out of the tank.
Beckner said the fish feed is dispensed on a timer so that they receive a set amount at regular intervals.
Lightfield explained that the water from the fish tank goes through the plant substrate not into the dirt but into the absorbent clay rocks that absorb the water and salt from the plants.
