Character Analysis: Lady Macbeth
Explain how Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth. AO1. Macbeth’s wife Lady Macbeth is one of the strongest female characters in literature. Unlike her husband, she is presented at the beginning as lacking all humanity, as we see well in her opening scene, where she calls upon the “Spirits that subjugate the thoughts of men” to rescue her feminine indifference. He was also driven by ambition; burning ambition to be queen. Lady Macbeth often mocks her husband for his lack of courage, even though his bloody deeds on the battlefield are known. But in public she is able to act as a perfect (perfect, ideal) hostess who welcomes her victim, the king, to her castle. When he comes out right after Duncan’s death, the audience is left wondering if this is still part of his act.
Although she is portrayed as tough and ruthless – representative of the expectations of women at that time, and scolding her husband for not being brave enough to kill Duncan, the speed of events becomes too much for even her. He becomes mentally unstable, a mere shadow of his former self, and speaks in Act V, Scene 1 when he “confesses” to his part in the murder. His death is the event that causes Macbeth to think (think, think, think) for the last time about the nature of time and death in the speech “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow” (Act V, Scene 5).
