Some students find it really difficult to understand improper fractions and mixed numbers. When you’re teaching small groups it’s really helpful to provide a variety of games and activities to help them practice these skills independently. Today, I’m sharing my favorite improper fraction activities and games that my students just can’t get enough of!

Understanding how to rewrite improper fractions as mixed numbers requires a conceptual understanding first. First I like students to see what improper fractions look like. It is important that they arrive at these observations on their own (or through a guided conversation).

My favorite way to help students understand improper fractions is with my post-it note fraction models. (If you haven’t already grabbed them from my Equivalent Fractions post, you can grab them below.)

Looking for a concrete way to help your students visualize fractions? Glue, print, and let your students color in their fractions to create useful visuals in your classroom!

We use these as a whole or in small groups to look at improper fractions. I show each student half of a post-it note. Then, I write 1/2 on the board and ask them to gloss over that fraction on their post-it notes.

When all students have finished shading, I write 2/2 on the board. “What makes this part look so shaded?” Many students will raise their voice against this
