AURORA, Colo. — A fish and a turtle died when a small pond in Aurora Park froze, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).
Cat Tries To Catch Fish Stuck In Frozen Lake
The shallow pool at Olympic is a spring that draws water from the surrounding park just off the West Tailgate Creek tributary, according to wildlife officials who investigated the site.
The CPW said that it is likely that the previous floods allowed the carp to enter the pond, which is up to two meters deep.
During the winter, the pond freezes completely, killing the carp and turtles. CPW said at least one small carp and one crab survived.
It appears to be a red-eared turtle, which may have come to the lake from a nearby drain, or it may be a released animal, officials said.
