The traditional black and white dog from Capleigh Stud Farm in Newbridge, western New South Wales, set a new Australian record for Kalpie when it sold at auction for $49 million on Thursday.

Breeder Chris Stapleton said it appeared to be his lucky number as he celebrated his 49th wedding anniversary with his wife Pauline on the day.
The previous record was $35,200 set last year. Stapleton predicted $30,000,000 for Eve and was surprised by the result.
“He was a really good dog and he was really bred. It’s no accident that he was bred to be as good as he is,” she said.
“He was very laid back, went with the flow and wasn’t very interested in things,” she said.

“He’s a great dog because he’s not hyperactive and when you need a job done, he’s willing and able to do it. He’s a great dog.”
When bids hit $46,000,000 from buyers on Newbridge and AuctionPlus, auctioneer Jason Pearce joked, “It’s safe to say it’s on the market.”
Pierce, from the old town of Mudgee, said working dogs were in high demand due to a lack of farming skills.
“As with any product, as the demand increases, so does the cost. There’s a lot of emphasis on the shortage of people, the low skills, so there’s a need for a dog that can do more,” he said.

“After 20 months of training, it’s very rare that he has the vascularity and the physical features,” Pierce said. “It’s the complete package.”
Stapleton, who has about 20 dogs, including puppies and a retired Kelby, said the prize for the working dog is a warm kennel.

Eulooka Hoover, a two-year-old male dog, sold to an anonymous buyer at the Kelpie Association’s annual dog auction in Casterton, Victoria, on Sunday, It achieved $25,000,000 (£13,650) more than the set price set at auction in 2019.
The Kelpie is a unique Australian Shepherd breed that originated on the English frontier and was developed for herding sheep and cattle.

Karen Stephens, president of the Casterton Water Ghost Association in Victoria, said she did not expect the dog to fetch a high price after the auction was moved at the last minute due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We had a batch of 51 and we knew the dogs…were good dogs, but we certainly didn’t expect to set a new world record like we did.”
Trainer David Lee raised Hoover at his Eden Hope estate. In the auction book, he describes Hoover’s ability to work with sheep, cows and goats in the yard and barn.

He added: “When I first met Hoover, I knew he had potential and the auction proved that.
“She is a wonderful working dog and I am now looking forward to working with her new owners on transforming her.”
