This little project is based on the arrowhead display I did with my dad in the girls’ common room at the farm. I just love how it turned out and I think it could easily be used to display other collections, from rocks to shells, and it’s a sweet way to commemorate a summer adventure by choosing the perfect pieces to add to the collection. The custom shadow box my dad made is a much bigger project, but here’s a simplified version.

Rocks or other small things (this is a mix of some from our garden, some from Chip’s childhood, and some bought from one of my favorite baby stores, Treehouse)  | clips (you can even have them cut it to size for you at the store if you need to – they have smaller 2′ x 4′ sheets available!) | two 3/4″ square staples | Four brass screws | two packs of 3/4″ medium hinges | 10′ copper wire (sells it by the foot from home – just ask for help!) | phillips head screwdriver | drill and small drill | picture hanging bracket | jigsaw or hacksaw | black paint (I used chalkboard spray)

First, place your items on the bar to determine how big it should be. Cut it down to size using a jig saw or hacksaw (or get the guys at the shop to do it!). Then paint the board and cut the plugs to size. I made the vertical pieces shorter and the horizontal pieces longer. Next, attach the hinges to a clamp, two on each side. It helps if you practice beforehand! After this, attach the other side of the hinges to the studs. This is easiest to do if you just lay it on the table to keep the pegs aligned with the back of the peg. Next I screwed brass screws on top of the horizontal to hold the clamps in place. Be sure to pre-drill and do it carefully and slowly by hand as this wood can split very easily! Then comes the fun part! Place the stones and loop the copper wire around them, through the pin holes and screw the back to hold the stones in place. The copper wire I used came as a 7 strand, so I split it into two or three strands.

It’s a really fun way to display a small collection – and I think labels would be cute too, saying where they were found and when.
