When it comes to choosing the perfect TV for your room, bigger and closer is usually better. The size not only affects the price of a TV, but also has a great impact on the quality of the perceived picture. Use our size and distance calculator to determine what size TV to buy based on your distance from your screen.
There are many factors involved in determining the optimal viewing distance, and there are many different criteria you can use. Apart from size, factors such as resolution and even your eyesight can affect how you see a screen. Since everyone’s vision is different, this is not an exact science, but a general guide based on scientific principles of vision and resolution.
Since almost all resolutions found today are 4k (Ultra High Definition), it would take a very large TV to look very closely to see the imperfections related to the resolution. So you can sit closer to your TV and have a more immersive experience than with a lower resolution. Think of it like a cinema: the more the TV takes up your view, the more immersive it feels.
This does not mean that you should stay a foot away from the TV. Having the biggest possible screen is not always ideal. The total horizontal field of view of the human visual system is about 200 degrees, part of which is peripheral vision. While it makes sense to use the largest possible TV when watching movies, not everything is designed to fill the entire field of view. If you try to watch a sporting event up close while looking at one part of the screen, it becomes very noticeable and can quickly become nauseating.

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers recommends sitting with the screen at least 30° away from your field of view for a good experience.
That’s generally a good guide, but people who primarily use their TV for movies may benefit from sitting a little closer for a more theater-like experience. The SMPTE “reference” position and THX recommendation for cinemas is about 40°. However, the minimum viewing angle is fine for most purposes, and most people should be comfortable sitting at a distance of 30 ° from the screen that fills the horizontal field of view.
It should also be noted that this angle assumes that a person is watching the TV with their head at eye level. Not all living room setups meet these criteria exactly, so it’s best to use this as a guide only. Learn more about perspective.

Angular resolution is the extent to which the eye can “see” or distinguish individual details in an image. Experts suggest that someone with 20/20 vision (or 6/6 using the metric system) can distinguish details that are 1/60 of a degree apart. Our ability to distinguish fine details depends not only on sight, but also on distance. At a certain distance, depending on your eyesight, your eyes will not be able to make out every detail. So if you sit too far, your eyes will not be able to distinguish the image, but if you sit too close, the image will appear pixelated. With lower resolutions, you have to stand a little further away so you don’t notice the pixels, while 4k and beyond give you more freedom.
Sitting next to a 1080p TV, for example, looks almost like watching it through a screen door because you can see the individual pixels even though it’s playing a high quality 1080p HD movie. Increasing the distance from the TV also increases the density of detail, resulting in a better image. Since the pixel density of 4k TVs is so great, this problem is harder to see. You have to be very close to a fairly large TV for the pixels to be noticeably distracting.
With 8k TVs, the density increases even more, making resolution gaps harder to notice unless you’re standing very close together. However, this also reduces the degree to which perceived differences in image quality become noticeable. Since 8k resolution is more pixel dense, you have to get much closer to really resolve those details. For that reason (besides content), 8k only really makes sense if you want a really big screen and plan to sit close to it. Learn more about the difference between 4k and 8k.
Still, everyone’s eyesight is a little different, and most TVs these days support at least 4k, so visual acuity isn’t the best way to find the right distance. It should be used to determine the closest you can get to a TV that doesn’t hit the resolution limit.
Samsung Odyssey Ark Review: When Bigger Isn’t Always Better
This chart shows the point at which resolution enhancement becomes useful, depending on the size and distance of your TV. Each line represents the optimal viewing distance for each resolution, but any TV that falls within that color range should notice the difference in picture quality. So, for example, if you have a 65″ TV, the viewing distance at which the eyes can actually process the details of 4k content is about 4 feet. However, any distance between 4 and about 8.5 feet is enough to appreciate the difference between 4k and 1080p on a 65″ TV. If you go too far, the image will look the same as 1080p HD.
The chart suggests that at some point, 4k UHD may not be worth the upgrade – for example, if you’re 7 feet away and have a 55-inch TV. But really, that graphic is just a guide, and since 4k TVs have become the standard, the question of whether it fits is a moot point. While your eyes may not be able to tell the difference at some point, your next TV will likely be a 4k TV anyway. The resolution’s optimal viewing distance can help you determine a living room setup that takes full advantage of your TV’s resolution, but since angular resolution is rarely an issue with UHD content, we recommend that using the calculator tool at the top of the page, based on the best solution. visual field.
There is also the issue of compression. Even if you are watching HD content rendered at high resolution, some artifacts will appear due to the compression algorithm. Artifacts can appear in many forms, such as noisy, blurry or pixelated images (see image on the right). Some artifacts may even be visible from a distance, so consider the numbers above as for perfectly uncompressed media. These numbers show the minimum distance at which you start to lose the resolution advantage.
You might be thinking “My couch is 10 feet from the TV, which according to the chart means I need a 75″ TV. That’s crazy!”
