How Much Is 6 Teaspoons – Call it greed, selfishness, or idealism, but no one should accuse Americans of being bitter: We eat more sugar than people in any other country—up to 30 teaspoons a day, by some estimates. (Indians, at the other end of the spectrum, drink only one.)
The reasons go back to the 1960s, when supermarkets sprouted up in American cities and corn-syrup sodas and milkshakes were on the dinner table. By 1996, our daily calorie intake from added sugars had increased by more than 35 percent.

Additionally, during the oil shortages of the 1980s and 1990s, manufacturers replaced flavored oils with flavorings in their products. “Nowadays it’s hard to find foods without added sugar,” said Dr. Andrew Bremer, director of diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolic diseases at the National Institutes of Health. In fact, three-quarters of the food we buy today, including bread, breakfast cereal and salads, contains sugar.

Here’s the problem: regular sugar (like fruit, for example) comes with fiber, which helps us control how we digest food. Without fiber, sugar can wreak havoc on your body, eventually leading to obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other health problems. Given these risks, experts recommend reducing sugar intake. In March, the World Health Organization recommended that 5 percent of your daily energy intake should come from added sugars, with the average serving for adults being six teaspoons — about 25 grams.
The problem is that it’s hard to tell how much sugar you’re eating. You’re probably used to seeing applesauce and corn syrup, but what about barley malt, dextrose, corn syrup—and 56 other names for added flavorings?
In addition, food companies are not required to distinguish between added sugar and added sugar labels. The U.S. Department of Agriculture used to include added sugars in online data, but it removed that feature in 2012 after companies declared added sugar percentages a trade secret.
Last year, the Food and Drug Administration proposed changes to nutrition labels and required companies to disclose added and artificial flavors. But big brands like Hormel and General Mills are fighting back — and even if a new label is approved, it could be years before packaging changes*.
