I asked my followers on social media how they fill the cups. Most ingredients like flour or sugar are taken out of the bag and spread on the surface, so that’s the method I took when measuring similar ingredients on my calculator. I also like to give the bag a little squeeze beforehand to break up the knots.
Many conversion charts give 1 cup of flour as 120g. However, I found the only way to get a low one was to sift the flour and then use a spoon to fill the cup with the ground flour. I don’t know about you, but I prefer to sift the flour after measuring it, rather than before. So, in my conversion, you will get a cup of flour that weighs more than it shows how I fill a cup.
For items in small packages, I pour the cup directly into the bag and level it evenly at the top.

For soft things like butter or cream cheese, I press the cup with the back of the spoon to make sure any holes are filled and then smooth the top.
Baking accuracy is important, so for baking recipes I recommend using grams if you can.
When I was working through all the conversions on this calculator, I realized that how I filled a cup could have a big impact on the amount of ingredients that might fit me.
In the picture below both cups appear to be full of flour. However, the one on the right weighs about 40% more than the one on the left, as I packed the flour as tightly as possible.

The official size of an American cup is 236.588ml, but most cups available for purchase in stores easily accept 240ml (this is what I used in my calculator). However, there are some cup manufacturers who sell 250ml cups (but keep ½ a 120ml cup!).
This is not a big problem as long as you know who you are. The biggest problem is that not all the cups sold are authentic.
I have two cup sizes and neither of them hold the size they should. My individual cup holds 65ml (it should be 60ml), but the whole cup holds 225ml when it should be 240ml.

Imagine you are measuring walnuts. If you add a whole cup, you will add less if you chop it well before adding it to the cup.
There are also things like Nutella or Black Treacle that are difficult to remove from the cup after filling. It is unlikely that you will get everything you put in so you may end up adding less to your mixture than the recipe calls for.
Many scales have a reset button that allows you to reset the scale to 0 so you can continue measuring multiple ingredients in one bowl. It’s great because it means you can pour whatever you want into your mix without getting too many extra dimensions of dirt.
Imagine you have a recipe that calls for a cup of butter, flour, maple syrup and Nutella (not sure what to do!). To get an accurate measurement, you will need to have multiple cups or wash the cup between each item before measuring the next one.

There is a small cup under a cup. As far as measurements go it’s a bit murky! Also, the amount you can fit into a stackable cup can vary greatly depending on the shape of the cup. So I don’t use either of these descriptions in my diet (a flat cup, spoon or teaspoon for me).
In addition to the main calculator, I thought it would be useful to provide conversion tables for a selection of the most common ingredients.
