How Many Miles Is 500 Ft

How Many Miles Is 500 Ft – A new online map resource helps you find your driving radius, but you don’t need a pencil, ruler and paper map. AP

Remember the old song “500 Miles From Home”? Think of it as a challenge rather than a lament, and you might come up with some great ideas for a road trip.

How Many Miles Is 500 Ft

This can be done the old-fashioned way by calculating distances on a paper map using miles and a ruler scale. But now there are free online map radius tools that show at a glance which places are within a given distance.

Go to the website and scroll down to the “Preferences” form. Enter your starting city in the “Location radius by location name” field.

Skip Latitude and Longitude and go to the “Radius Distance” section. The form here automatically sets the radius distance to 1,000 kilometers, but you can reset it by typing the number of miles you want to drive in the “miles” box next to the kilometers box.

Scroll up to see the green circle on the map. To see cities in your drive-to area in more detail, hold the minus sign on the left and zoom in by moving it up two dots.

Depending on traffic and highway speeds, most people can easily cover 500 miles in a day’s drive, so starting at that distance can prompt some interesting choices. If you’re taking a week off, spending the first and last days traveling to your destination and back is often an acceptable trade-off to save on airfare.

On the website, you can quickly start with New York, Montreal, Toronto, Cleveland and Virginia Beach, Va. Can find trips within a 500-mile radius.

Once you calculate the actual driving routes, targets on the edge of the circle may exceed your maximum distance. The radius tool measures distance as the crow flies without considering highways or terrain, so it’s a good idea to check distances against the mileage calculator on MapQuest or GoogleMaps.

Safely within a 500-mile circle around New York, the actual distance to Toronto is 475 miles; Cleveland, 463 miles; Montreal, 376 miles; and Virginia Beach, Va., 362 miles. Greenville, N.C., appears to be on the edge of the 500-mile circle, and GoogleMaps’ mileage calculator says the driving distance is 522 over 500 miles.

Looking at some other starting points offers some great vacation ideas within a 500-mile circle: Baltimore Myrtle Beach, SC; From Denver to Mount Rushmore; Mammoth Cave from Cleveland in Kentucky; Minneapolis to Kansas City; Los Angeles to Tucson; Atlanta to Orlando; Boise, Idaho, Portland, Ore.; Helena, Mont., to Salt Lake City.

If you want to make a seven- to 10-hour trip, it’s more cost-effective to fly versus a 500-mile road trip. For one person, it’s not that much, but a family of four is likely to spend more than $1,000 to travel anywhere. Air travel also costs more than the cost of plane tickets; Transport, food and airport transfers and other incidentals and car hire when you land.

By contrast, at about $2 a gallon of gas, driving 1,000 miles in a car that gets 25 mpg will cost less than $100. If you can’t make the trip in one day, even if you count rent, meals and a night at a motel during the trip, it will cost less than a plane ticket. If you’re feeling ambitious, go early in the morning and easily reach your destination 400 miles away by lunchtime.

Or if you want to leave early and arrive at dinner, expand your radius to 800 miles and expand your vacation options. My husband and I drove the 840 miles from New York to Mammoth Cave in one day with two kids (no electronics to entertain them), and had an inexpensive and memorable vacation visiting the national park and nearby attractions.

If you use the radius of the map to expand the list of potential vacation spots, the appeal is partly psychological. Many people are poor at judging distance, and knowing how far something is makes it seem more attainable.

Moreover, distance measurement is a national pastime. Of course, there are thousands of highway mileage signs that list distances to other cities, but there are many examples of strange or curious mileage signs.

American soldiers stationed overseas sometimes set up handmade signposts thousands of miles away to list their mileage to their favorite destinations and hometowns. A sign in downtown Anchorage indicates the distance between Tokyo and Paris. Many small towns in Maine are named after major cities around the world, so there are popular signposts at local crossroads showing the names of places like China, Norway, Mexico and Paris just a few miles down the road.

As you reach the summit of Katahdin Mountain in Maine, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, you’ll see Springer Mountain, Ga., just 2 miles south of the trail. 000 miles away. Are you tailgating (eg, following too closely)? Sometimes, if you drive an SUV or sports car, you may be driving too close to the vehicle in front of you. Studies show that family and economy cars have shorter tailgates than sports cars and SUVs by a ratio of two to one.

In fact, the same study compared the amount of tailgating in different US states and found that these five states exhibited.

It causes thousands of road accidents and many deaths every year. By learning the safe following distances for different vehicles, such as snow plows, semi trucks, emergency vehicles and the average car, you can avoid tailgating and potentially life-changing accidents.

A rule of thumb is to maintain a following distance of at least three seconds, which gives you time to react and avoid dangerous situations. This can be calculated by using a fixed object such as a pole or an overpass to determine how far the car is in front of you. When you’re driving in bad weather, it’s a good idea to give yourself plenty of room to avoid screeching on the brakes on slick roads. Here are some examples of safe driving distances:

Rear-end collisions are the most common form of accidents where one driver (or both) is not paying attention. This often happens when drivers don’t have enough time to maneuver safely in slow or stopped traffic. Follow the three second rule and think about the car in front of you. A semi-truck takes up more space than a car, and a car takes up more space than a plow. Avoid distractions on the road and increase the following distance when necessary. Beginning Friday evening, June 11, crews with ALDOT will work to permanently close the bridge opening on I-59 northbound.

“We’re monitoring that bridge to make sure any problems develop,” said ALDOT Regional Engineer DeJarvis Leonard. “The structure is still good, the actual concrete sport that you ride on deteriorates with age.”

Leonard said the bridge was last inspected in April 2020 and is inspected every two years, but after the hole, he said they plan to inspect it more frequently.

“We’re going to do a comprehensive review every month,” Leonard said. “We have staff, maintenance crews responsible for riding all our routes at least once a week. The person responsible for riding that section is now responsible for keeping a close eye on the riding on that section.

“We’re improving what we’re seeing,” he said. “It may call for other improvements after looking at the bridge as a whole, but we should at least replace the deck.”

“We’re really rebuilding north of Sackville Mountain Road,” he said. “We’re currently working on adding more lanes from 459 to Sackville Mountain Road on 59. That’s in the design.”

“With the volume of traffic up and down Sackville Mountain Road, we’ll see a significant improvement on 59,” he said. Texas was beautiful. The hills roll into small towns with farms, very decent (albeit huge) cars and non-stop live music.

Not so great (0–30 miles): Getting out of Austin was a mess. After putting our bikes together we hit the late start at 10:30am—90+ miles to go, little awareness of what lies ahead, and I’m a little scared.
