Before each high school team crossed the track, my coach Frank Mooney gave each athlete an index card with a goal time and suggested that they write a split on it. The target time was designed to be tough but achievable on a good day, and recommended splits helped us stay on track at the start, middle and end of the race to achieve it.

Unfortunately, none of these conditions exist. The way I worked in the 2010 race gives me an advantage, but my practice and training are different this time. My running history is very limited – and, as of 2010, non-existent – so it’s hard to compare my performance to that of other players. And my training grounds in Boulder are very different from those in Marin: the elevations range from 5,400-8,550 feet, and the roads are rugged, slippery, thin and dry.

Although that effort may not have been perfect, I tried to set a reasonable goal for the race based on my training runs. I think I’m in the right place for the ball. Here’s what I did:

1. I have selected 11 recent training runners that I think best represent what I would do on a race day ie. time, apparent vertical change, and constant velocity. I didn’t include running hard or easy, that is. There is no career limit or backtracking. I then compiled the data collected during the training run by my Suunto Ambit2 S GPS Watch.

2. I calculated the vertical change in miles for each trip, which is an indication of the inherent difficulty of the route. This gives me a second variable to compare running against, and average speed.

3. I control for the effect of the length of the average speed of each speed, against a comparable effort that can be achieved at sea level. In the Marin Headlands, studies of endurance athletes suggest that I can expect a 5 percent improvement in performance.

4. Finally, I plotted the correlation of Vertical Change per Mile and Pace-Adjusted speed for each training session. The trendline is surprisingly positive, i.e. my average speed on a training ride was faster or slower depending on the amount of uphill and downhill.

For those who do not know the dramatic effect of speed gain / loss in speed, you may be surprised that I did not rely on speed and speed in the chart, I think that I will naturally slow down in the long run and long. Out of curiosity, I plotted this relationship and found that it is not true, because the straight gain / loss has a greater effect on speed than on training distance.

As the chart above shows, my average speed is very dynamic and is often affected by vertical changes in the course mile. This relationship is actually much stronger than the relationship between average speed and distance.

For example, my modified pace on October 20th was 7:37 for 29.1 kilometers, while three days earlier my pace was 10:01 for 10.6 kilometers. What does the difference of 2.5 minutes per mile mean? Because the run on October 17th had about 400 feet of elevation gain per mile. In comparison, I was 1:10 slower per mile on October 31st compared to October 17th, when my route had the same vertical change (actually, slightly more – 565 compared to 529)

If I know the vertical change for each mile of the race, I can estimate my average pace and calculate the finishing time. According to the course guide, the course is 49.7 miles long, and has 9,237 feet of elevation gain and 10,043 feet of descent, or 388 vertical feet per mile. Rob Krar, who won last year’s race, reports slightly different data on Strava, but I’ll stick with the official numbers.

Assuming a correlation on race day between the straight course changes and my average pace, I would expect an average pace of 8:52 per mile, which would result in a 7:20 time the last one. Here’s a chart with the predicted speed entered, right on the trend line:

Of course, there are reasons to think that this relationship may not always hold true on race day. For example, I will benefit from the excitement of race day, a group of other runners, and new legs in two weeks. However, I would fall badly in the race between Miles 31-50, areas I had not covered during my training. And I can have unexpected problems on race day: falling, messing up my food, getting travel-related laziness, etc.
