How Do You Become A Certified Cert Volunteer
During a catastrophic event or disaster, city emergency services may be delayed or overwhelmed, leaving neighborhoods and businesses to do basic lifesaving on their own until professional responders arrive. As a trained CERT member, you have the knowledge and skills to help your family, friends and community and first responders.
Community Emergency Response Team Training Underway
Members are trained to prepare for, respond to, and recover from a disaster. When activated, CERT members can help support first responders by assuming duties such as damage assessments, welfare checks on elderly and vulnerable residents, emergency shelter support, emergency communications and amateur radio (HAM) support, and responsibilities at the City Emergency Operations Center. (EOC) and other tasks requested by city emergency responders.
In addition to disaster preparedness, members are encouraged to help with many community programs and events around the city, including food distributions, lecturing at City Hall, registering for city council meetings, and first aid at special events.
CERT members bring diverse professional backgrounds and unique skills to support the needs of program administration and outreach.
The CERT Training Academy is held twice a year and uses a nationally recognized 20-hour curriculum approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). In addition to the required training, CERT members are also certified in CPR and First Aid. After the CERT training, the city offers a CPR/AED/First Aid certification course.

Upon completion of 20 hours and a short online FEMA course, members are recognized as program graduates and receive a certificate of completion, CERT t-shirt and vest, and are sworn in as Disaster Relief Workers. Additional advanced course training opportunities are offered annually for those who wish to become more involved in community-wide emergency preparedness efforts and the CERT leadership team.

It’s fair to say that you are the first responder to major disasters and often see how ordinary people react. When hundreds or thousands of people are affected, our first responders are overwhelmed if community members don’t support them. When disaster strikes, it is everyone’s responsibility to respond. We need our first responders, but they also need us.
Fire Chief: Wilton Cert One Of Town’s Best Resources
There’s a growing force behind first responders that most of us don’t see. They are uniformed in green, yellow, and orange reflective gear; Directing traffic, distributing water bottles and making sure the people they help are okay. They are Certified Emergency Response Teams (CERT) who volunteer their time to assist our fire, police and paramedics during emergencies and other events.
Last month I attended the CERT conference in Florida and had a wonderful introduction to the world of CERT. They voluntarily go through a very rigorous training process that enables them to respond to any conceivable emergency. Training courses range from basic first aid to CPR to emergency response skills. You will learn how to put out small fires or safely get others out of dangerous situations before and after calling first responders. They’re often the first to arrive, as it could be your neighbor or the bagger at your local grocery store. It’s truly amazing what people do to support one another in times of need.
To become a CERT volunteer, you must enroll in prep courses and apply to join a CERT-sponsored team. You must also agree to attend refresher courses annually to maintain your certification. Below are the basic classes required, but there are many new classes and other techniques that CERT teams can master as their teams grow.
Fire safety and firefighting: 2.5 hours. How to identify hazardous materials, extinguish small fires and use firefighting equipment.
Community Emergency Response Team (cert) Training
Disaster Medical Response: 5 hours. Treatment and assessment, bleeding control, CPR-like airway management. Part first aid, part logistics of emergency medicine.
According to FEMA, 2,700 CERT teams and 600,000 volunteers are currently trained and ready to respond when needed. Imagine – a silent army of everyday people ready to save lives. Great I know.
As I marvel at their selfless dedication to their communities and their ability to help us in our worst moments, I wonder: What more can we do to support our first responders? Well, they’ve already thought about it and are forming Teen CERTs to ensure that CERT’s legacy lives on and that high school and middle school students have the same information to support their peers at sporting events, school dances and on the school corridors.
The only thing that can make it more enjoyable is making sure our CERTs have all the resources and tools they need to respond, which can be challenging. They are volunteers which means they have no budget and very few resources to respond to emergencies. Many CERT volunteers organize fundraisers to support their teams who already volunteer and sometimes pay for certification courses.
