Great Zimbabwe was part of a large and wealthy global trade network. Among the ruins there, archaeologists discovered pottery from China and Iran, as well as Arab coins. The elite of the Zimbabwean empire controlled trade to the East African coast. However, the city was largely abandoned in the 15th century when the Shona people migrated elsewhere. The exact reasons for the abandonment are unknown, but it is likely that resource depletion and overcrowding were contributing factors.
The Great Zimbabwe Archaeological Site consists of several sections. The first section is the Hill Complex, a series of structural ruins located on the site’s steepest hill. It is generally believed that this was the religious center of the place. The Hill complex is the oldest part of Great Zimbabwe and shows signs of construction dating back to around 900 BC.
The ruins of the second section, the Great Wall, are perhaps the most exciting. The Great Wall is a walled, circular area under a hill complex dating back to the 14th century. The walls are over 9.7 meters (32 ft) high in places, and the perimeter of the enclosure is 250 meters (820 ft). The walls were built without mortar, resting on carefully shaped stones to independently hold the wall’s shape. Inside the walls is a second set of walls that follow the same curve as the outer walls, ending in a 10 meter high stone tower. Although this enclosure is unknown, archaeologists speculate that it may have been a royal residence or a symbolic granary. It is one of the largest surviving structures in ancient sub-Saharan Africa.
The third section is the ruins of the valley. The ruins of the valley consist of a considerable number of houses, mostly built of mud brick (

Near the Great Wall. The distribution and number of houses indicates that Great Zimbabwe had a large population of 10,000-20,000 people.
Archaeological research has found several soapstone sculptures of birds in the ruins. These birds presumably served religious functions and may have been displayed on pedestals. These birds appear on the modern flag of Zimbabwe and are the national symbols of Zimbabwe.
The ruins of Great Zimbabwe were declared a World Heritage Site in 1986 by the United Nations, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Archaeological excavations of the ancient site are limited. Unfortunately, significant looting and destruction occurred at the hands of European visitors in the 20th century. Although they were all too happy to explore and pillage the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, the European colonists thought the city was too complex to have been built by Africans, and instead believed it was built by the Phoenicians or other non-Africans. . However, despite the damage done by those colonial raiders, today the legacy of Great Zimbabwe lives on as one of the largest and most culturally important ancient sites of its kind in Africa.

While houses come in all shapes and sizes, Carcary’s house just floats. Instead of waiting for the perfect time to retire and plan their future, the seed was planted more than 23 years ago when they were visiting Pas-a-Grill and noticed a caterpillar. Shawna said to Shawn.
Shona grew up in South Africa and was happily married to Sean for 35 years. In 1997, the couple moved their family of two girls, two dogs and a cat to Tampa. Together they built several successful family businesses, including Realty Buy Design and Hey Vacay. After giving their house on the bay, along with all the furniture, to their children, they followed their passion for ocean living. Small 500 square meters. ft. the residence, which was already part of their retirement plans, allows them to continue working part-time with their children and grandchildren while still having a land base. “This freed us up to move around and still work part-time from our boat or apartment,” Shona said. “Less really is more…in fact, it’s the secret to happiness.”
Shawn named the boat Happy Wife and affectionately Happy Life, and he let Shawn choose the boat, saying, “As long as we’re together and on the water, I don’t care what we live for.”
The couple remodeled their home, doing all the work except installing granite and some engine work. The initial renovation took seven weeks, with Sean and Shona working 12-hour days.

“I like to say it took us seven weeks and 4 years because we were constantly tweaking and doing technical checks on her,” Shona said. “On September 16, 2016, we had our first night on board and our first dinner as well.”
Every square inch of the ship has been redone, except for the walls, to create the couple’s dream home. “The cabins are all original to the boat. it had such big bones and the hull of the Hatteras is like a tank, so we knew we had a great boat,” Shona said. “We moved one engine, rebuilt our bed in the cabin, fixed kitchen and bathroom counters, new appliances, tiled walls and floor, installed new toilets. We redid all the tarps and painted the boat from red to white on the outside. We made sure to keep as much of the woodwork outside as possible.” The couple wanted to maintain integrity and a vintage aesthetic while making their home on the water comfortable and current. “I didn’t want to have a typical ‘boat interior’ furnished
